Almost $6000 has been raised for the Victorian and Queensland Flood Appeals following the ‘Australia Day Goes GloBALL’ cricket match, proudly sponsored by iPrimus and hosted by the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria at Windy Hill on Wednesday.

Through the generosity of fans and supporters, the Bombers and Cricket Victoria have together donated $5,909.20 to both the Victorian and Queensland Flood Appeals.

Chief Executive, Ian Robson said the Australia Day event showcased the community spirit of Australians.

“The 'Australia Day goes GloBALL' event showcased the community spirit of both the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria as well as our fans,” Robson said.

“The day was a wonderful event for all involved and with the generous support of our fans, players and sponsors we were able to raise almost $6000 for the flood relief appeal.”

The Australia Day event also brought greater awareness to the GloBALL program, a joint initiative run by the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria which aims to help international students and newly arrived migrants settle into life in Australia.

In 2010, the program saw more than 4000 participants receive the opportunity to participate in various football and cricket activities including free entry to matches, clinics and tours with the proud support of iPrimus.

Nick Hannett, Community Manager at Essendon said the Australia Day cricket match was a hugely successful initative that provided awareness to the GloBALL program.

“Sport- particularly Australian Rules and Cricket, has the unique ability to bring people together from all walks of life. It doesn’t matter where you were born, your age or gender- sport is a common language and is an important part of what it is to be Australian,” Hannett said.
