ESSENDON midfielder Brent Stanton says the Bombers' mental approach played a significant part in Saturday night's thrashing at the hands of the Adelaide Crows.

The Bombers' recent poor interstate record continued with the 84-point thumping, and Stanton said the side had to be better at switching on for away matches.

"We've struggled a little bit interstate, but it might be the mentality," he said.

"We haven't really worked it out. We have some fantastic people around the football club who have come from interstate.

"We've got to mature as a side, and we're building a group that can hopefully take us forward."

Stanton admitted the Bombers were struggling to find consistency in their game, and said that was something they had to overcome if they were to improve.

“We’re trying to find answers that we can become a more consistent football side. All the good footy sides are performing at the top level week in, week out. With the group we’ve got now, we’re playing three or four good weeks and then might have a poor one, so we’re trying to work out reasons why that’s happening,” he said.

“If we stick to the game plan that’s being set and the structures and listen to the coaches, it should hold us in good stead.”

Stanton said the Bombers had shown that they had the ability to mix it with the best teams in the competition, but just needed to maintain belief in themselves.

“I think we’re disappointed as a group that we haven’t won more games than we have," he said.

"We want to reduce that gap between our best and not our best football. If we can bridge that gap, we’ll hopefully earn a bit more respect.”

Ruckman David Hille is still a couple of weeks away from returning from a hamstring injury, but Stanton said Angus Monfries and Ricky Dyson were both chances to return from injury for the clash with Melbourne on Sunday.
