Participants of Essendon’s multicultural program, Pascoe Vale North Primary School, finished runners up in the AFL Statewide Multicultural Schools Cup held last Friday December at Punt Road in Richmond.

Essendon’s 18-week multicultural schools program run in partnership with the AFL and the Victorian Government in Melbourne’s North West region reaches over 3,000 students and teachers per year.

Essendon multicultural development officer, Jieh-Yung Lo, said the event achieved the program’s aims to unite children of various cultures through AFL football.

“AFL football has demonstrated in the past and present that it has the capacity to bring people together from all cultural and religious backgrounds,” Lo said.

“Events such as this build strong community relationships as well as developing social inclusion and supports the development of a strong, healthy and unified society.

“It wasn’t just the practical skills that the students demonstrated, it was also the fantastic sportsmanship displayed after matches. I am looking forward to working harder next year in hopes of bringing the cups to Windy Hill.”

Paul Phypers, head coach of Pascoe Vale North Primary School, believed the event was a fantastic day for all students and teachers.

“The Statewide Multicultural Cup provided a great opportunity for all of the children to enjoy their football and make new friends. A big thank you to the Essendon Football Club for their support of the program throughout 2008,” Phypers said.

The Essendon Football Club wishes to thank and acknowledge the AFL Multicultural Program, AFL Victoria, the Victorian Government and City West Water for your support and participation.
