St Kilda did the Bombers a massive favour at The Dome this afternoon defeating the Kangaroos by 51 points. The win puts the Kangaroos a game out of the eight and they face Brisbane at the Gabba in Round 22. Fraser Gehrig and Nick Riewoldt were brilliant – Gehrig kicking 10 goals and Riewoldt taking 18 marks. Nick Dal Santo and Xavier Clarke were other key players. Sav Rocca – who kicked four goals – was the best for the Kangaroos along with Adam Simpson and Shannon Grant.
West Coast continued to make a late bid for finals football, thumping Carlton by 62 points at Subiaco Oval. The four points were important but so was the percentage boost. Chris Judd was outstanding again and must be a Brownlow Medal chance. Michael Braun and David Wirrpunda continued there recent good form. Nick Stevens was a standout for the Blues.
Geelong continued to emerge as a genuine Premiership contender, flogging Fremantle by 50 points and moving into the top four in the process. In appalling conditions, the Dockers looked all at sea as a Geelong side led by Joel Corey, Matthew Scarlett and Darren Milburn were simply more committed. Steve Johnson, Michael McCarthy and Peter Riccardi kicked two goals apiece for the winners.
It took Brisbane three quarters to shake off a determined Hawthorn but they eventually did so and kept their hopes of a minor Premiership alive. Jonathon Brown’s four goals engineered the 23-point win. Martin Pike, Luke Power and Chris Johnson were other good players in the trying conditions. Sam Mitchell and Lance Picioane were best for the Hawks.
Sydney lifted it's hopes of finals football and severely dented Melbourne’s hopes of a top-four finish at The Dome on Saturday night. The Swans jumped the Demons early to lead by 29 points at the main break. They then shut the game down in the second half to run out 21-point winners. Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin were awesome for the winners while Chris Heffernan and Nathan Brown tried hard for the Demons.
In other games, Port Adelaide thumped a disappointing Western Bulldogs by 86-points in Darwin and Adelaide kicked seven goals to nil in the last quarter to run out 52-point winners over Richmond.
