Essendon coach James Hird was tonight named a Life Member of the AFL for his service to Australian Football at the League’s Season Launch in Sydney.

Hird, named one of 12 new Life Members, qualified for the honour with a combine 300 games of service as a coach and player.
 
 
AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou said all 12 recipients had served the game in outstanding fashion through their careers and Life Membership was just reward for their efforts in building the game.
 
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, players Simon Black, Jude Bolton, Adam Goodes, Barry Hall and Luke Power all qualified for life membership by reaching 300 games of service.
 
While umpires Michael Vozzo and Stuart Wenn also qualified for 300 games of service.
 
Former Port Adelaide CEO Brian Cunningham, journalist Mike Sheahan and former AFL Commissioner Graeme John were recognised for service to the game.
