The cult movie Sound of Music and AFL Football would seem to have little in common. The splendid voices of the Von Trapp Family bouncing around the hills of Austria are a long way from the swearing, cursing, grunting and groaning we hear from both sides of the fence at the MCG every Saturday afternoon. But rumour has it that some Essendon players are set to unite the two at the upcoming Michael Long Celebration.

The Long Celebration on Sunday, August 4th will have a strong musical theme and the Essendon players are getting involved to pay tribute to their former teammate and champion of the club.

One delightful little ensemble that will be performing on the night is the Von Trapp Family Singers. The group will be ably led by veteran Paul Salmon and will include James Hird, Matthew Lloyd, Mark Johnson, Gary Moorcroft, Shane Harvey and Danny Jacobs.

""Longy is a big fan of the Sound of Music soundtrack so we have been working extremely hard on some tunes from that show - one of which is particularly close to Michael's heart. I think we are actually sounding very good - we may even consider going on tour after this show,"" a source revealed.

""I must say that Paul Salmon makes a delightful Julie Andrews and the Von Trapp children really warm to him. He would have made a wonderful nanny but I suppose AFL football is his first love.""

The Von Trapp Family Singers is just one of a number of acts being put together by the Essendon players for the Michael Long Celebration and it is sure to have those in attendance roaring with laughter - nobody moreso than the man the night is paying tribute to.
