The Australian Football League (AFL) has advised that the Hawthorn Football Club has lodged an appeal after last night's tribunal case involving Lance Franklin.

Franklin was found guilty of 'engaging in rough conduct' against Richmond’s Ben Cousins and suspended for two matches which would see him miss Saturday's finals deciding blockbuster with the Bombers at the MCG.

The match is expected to attract over 70,000 fans and will decide which of the two teams secures eighth place on the ladder and a spot in the finals.

Hawthorn has appealed on the basis that there was an 'error in law' and that no tribunal acting reasonably could have reached this verdict on the evidence before it.

The Appeals Board will sit at 5.30pm tomorrow (Thursday August 27) to hear the case.
