At 16 years old, Dustin Fletcher made the decision to focus solely on football and abandon his budding tennis career. Fletcher played junior tennis with Australian player Joe Sirianni at Maribyrnong tennis club and teamed up with Australian basketballer Chris Anstey to win the Victorian junior doubles championship. Yesterday Fletcher headed to the Australian open to watch good friend Sirianni in action and young Australian tennis talent Peter Luczak in the doubles.

23-year-old Luczak is a fanatical Essendon supporter and was rapt when his favourite player came to watch him in action. ""I saw Dustin watching my match and I got really nervous. He is my idol and I couldn't believe he had come to watch me play. My parents are Polish and didn't know much about football and didn't barrack for a team. So when we came to Australia I started to follow Essendon and I have been an avid supporter ever since,"" Luczak said.

After Luczak's doubles match, Fletcher and the 160th ranked seed, swapped tennis and football stories. To Luczak's delight, Fletcher presented the budding tennis star with an Essendon guernsey. Luczak couldn't wipe the smile from his face, despite losing his doubles match with fellow Aussie Jaymon Crabb (2-6, 4-6) to Simon Aspelin (Sweden) and John-Laddnie De Jager (South Africa).

Fletcher enjoys getting to the Australian open every year and checking out the action. The 27-year-old doesn't have any regrets about the sporting path he has chosen, however he did mention he would love to be able to match it with the best tennis players on the ATP tour. ""Tennis is a fantastic sport but to play on the circuit you have to be the absolute best. As much as I love tennis, I decided to stick to football and I suppose things have worked out pretty well. It was great to watch Peter play today and hopefully he can have a win in his third round match tomorrow,"" Fletcher said.
