The Bombers face the old enemy of the 1980s, Hawthorn, in one of this season's most important games for our charges. After consecutive losses against Melbourne and St Kilda, the Bombers win/loss ratio is now 5/3, disappointing after the impressive start which saw us jump away to a 5/1 opening.

This is the 17th occasion these two sides have met at Waverley, with the ledger leaning Hawthorn's way at 10 to 6. Under Kevin Sheedy, Essendon has defeated Hawthorn 17 out of 36 meetings. Essendon played Hawthorn in the 1983, 1984 and 1985 Grand Finals, the only time in the history of the VFL/AFL that the same teams have played each other three years in a row.
