The Bombers will use Friday's big loss as a spur for next year according to assistant coach Ashley Prescott.

Speaking on Weekend Rewind he said the year was extremely positive despite the poor finals effort.

""We didn't take our chances. Adelaide were exceptionally well organised and exceptionally hard running,"" he said.

""We needed to do everything right and we just couldn't sustain it. There is lots to learn and lots to improve on.""

Prescott defend the controversial decision to go into the game without a specialist ruckman.

""The plan was to try and go in with Hooker and use Lovett-Murray and maybe McPhee at times to give some support but really it was a probably a decision that came down to the match committee thinking it could give us a competitive advantage in one area of run,"" he said.

""We thought if we were going to be competitive and beat Adelaide it was going to be by having 22 runners who could take them on and, unfortunately, it wasn't the case.""

Despite the 96-point loss, there were a few positives to come out of the first final the club had played in five years.

""Lovett-Murray has been outstanding for the past month and a bit, he has been fantastic with his running and I am sure all the supporters and members are loving how he goes about his footy. He's probably right on the edge with his aggression and we need to make sure he doesn't spend too long on the sidelines.

""Adam McPhee worked hard with kicked four goals, Angus Monfries early was quite effective, Hocking and Stanton, certainly there were some positives but if you only have five or six contributors on the night it's going to be difficult to get near the opposition.

""You could walk away from the game, if we had lost by a smaller margin, and have people slapping you on the back saying you how good you are going or you can go away with your tail between your legs and have a steely determination to improve over the pre-season but what is better? It's certainly a bitter pill to swallow.""

A devastated Mark McVeigh told Bomber.tv the big loss would be used as motivation for 2010.

""These things make you stronger and bind the group together,"" he said in the rooms post-game.

""We have already spoken about the pre-season and the way we should come back and we are excited about next year. It's a real learning experience for everyone.""

Prescott said suspensions to Ryder, Lonergan and Lloyd against Hawthorn the week before really cost the team and all players had to learn not to make that same mistake again.
