Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Mark has taken a very big step in his career this season. He has basically swapped places with Mark Johnson to get Mark into the mid-field. He has found himself under extreme pressure against some of the best small forwards in the competition. He has done a very good job and become a consistent and hardened AFL player that is now approaching 100 games. We would expect this level of performance next season.
What some of fan’s had to say:
“His tenacity and commitment was excellent. Blanketed some good opposition players. Found his niche in defence and his disposal was accurate.” Joseph Versace.
“Really stepped up this year as a hard tough backman. So important down back with his deadly kicking. He has taken on different roles every year at Essendon, I can't wait to see what role he will be taking on in 2004. Good stuff Macca!!!” Josh Little.
“Improved season. Still has a lot of improving to do in other areas of his game though. Will have to be even better next year if Solly leaves.” Ben Gilbert.
“Mark McVeigh's work rate improved as the season progressed. He has had plenty of tough, dirty jobs that he carried out perfectly. He was able to negate the efforts of some of the better forwards in the competition. Well done Mark you don't have the glamourous jobs but you do your bit for the team always.” Helen Scully.
“McVeigh, played an excellent year this year and will maintain a spot in the team for all next year. A great backman!!! A superb year!” Chloe Slater.
“Played very good consistent football all year. This is a player we really need to retain to add versatility to our midfield.” Anne Hamzsak.
“Very consistent/solid year. Cemented himself as a regular at team selection and formed part of solid defence unit A valuable contributor.” Rod Ansell.
“What a revelation! Mark proved what a versitile footballer he is by revitilising his career and becoming our best small defender. A very good year and one that he should back on with pride. Great Final agianst Freo.” Alex Fair.
