The Western Bulldogs produced the season’s biggest upset thus far with a brilliant second half performance against St Kilda. The Dogs turned a 15-point deficit at half time into a 23-point win at the MCG. Brian Harris was brilliant at full back keeping Fraser Gehrig to one goal. Matthew Lloyd is now within two goals of Gehrig in the race for the Coleman Medal. Rohan Smith, Nathan Eagleton and Matthew Robbins were other stars.
West Coast had Adelaide buried by three-quarter time in their clash at Subiaco – leading by 51-points. The margin should have been far greater but for inaccurate kicking. Andrew Embley and Daniel Kerr were best for West Coast while Trent Hentchell and Andrew McLeod played lone hands for the losers.
Port Adelaide smashed Sydney at AAMI Stadium to the tune of 72-points. Warren Tredrea was magnificent kicking four goals and producing the sort of form that had him a Brownlow Medal favourite in the early stages of the season. Michael Wilson and Peter Burgoyne were other solid contributors. Jude Bolton and Barry Hall (three goals) tried hard for the losers.
Fremantle staged a stunning comeback to beat the hapless Tigers at the MCG this afternoon. Richmond fell apart after leading by 39-points midway through the second quarter kicking just three second-half goals to fall to a 10-point defeat. Justin Longmiur and Paul Hasleby were the engineers of a memorable win for the Dockers.
Geelong continued its outstanding recent form defeating the Kangaroos by 10 points at Skilled Stadium. There was little between the two sides all day but the Ctas edged clear late in the third quarter and maintained that advantage in a tight final quarter. Matthew Scarlett and Gary Ablett were brilliant for the winners. Leigh Colbert was the best for the Kangaroos.
Hawthorn’s season didn’t get any better at The Dome on Friday night losing to Carlton by 12 points. Brendan Fevola was magnificent again – his six goals the difference between the two teams. Nick Stevens was also good while Lance Whitnall showed he has plenty of good football left in him. Nathan Thompson was best for the Hawks.
