Essendon's wheelchair football teams have commenced their 2022 Robert Rose Foundation VWFL seasons in style, claiming a comprehensive clean sweep against Hawthorn at Boroondara Sports Complex on April 10.

The Bombers' senior team, which entered this VWFL season on the back of two consecutive Grand Final losses, proved a force to be reckoned with in its 20.4 (124) to 6.4 (40) win over the Hawks.

Star player Caleb Logan was the standout with 16 goals, while Sam Maraldo and James Leonard held firm in defence to repel the Hawks' attacks.

Fielding a second side in the VWFL's new development league, the Bombers' development team kept the Hawks' goalless in its 8.10 (58) to 0.3 (3) victory.

Four recruits donned the sash for the first time in the development league win, including Scott Van Gemert, who starred with a game-high four goals.

The VWFL Bombers will face Collingwood at Boroondara Sports Complex from 10:15am (development) and 11am (seniors) on Sunday in a grand final rematch.
