Star midfielder Darcy Parish will look to prove his fitness for round 15 as he battles a badly corked calf.
Parish missed the Dons’ win over the Saints after being unable to train properly following a nasty cork to his left calf in Essendon’s round 13 loss to Carlton.
Head of high performance Sean Murphy said the 24-year-old will look to train at Essendon’s main session on Wednesday which will provide a clearer picture of his availability for the Bombers’ clash with West Coast.
“He’ll be a test for this weekend,” Murphy told Essendon FC’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.
“All things considered, he’s just got to keep progressing. It was a very decent calf cork that he copped and there’s a fair bit of blood in and around that area.
“We’ll just get him going this week and by main training on Wednesday, he’ll get out there and do a bit and we’ll assess what his availability will be like for this weekend.”
Deputy vice-captain Andrew McGrath will miss at least two weeks after suffering an adductor strain.
The 24-year-old suffered the injury in the second half on Friday night and managed to finish the match, but Murphy said McGrath will spend time on the sidelines.
“Andy was really unfortunate to have that adductor strain,” Murphy said.
“It came on just into the third quarter. He was able to play out the game, but unfortunately it means he’ll miss a couple of weeks now.”
Key tall James Stewart will also spend several weeks out of action after suffering a plantar fascia injury in Essendon’s VFL win over Sandringham.
Stewart was in his second game back from a calf injury and was dominating with three goals before being unable to finish the match.
“’Stuz’ was really unfortunate to get a plantar fascia injury,” Murphy said.
“He’ll probably miss a couple of weeks and we’ll see how that settles down over that time.”
Defender Zach Reid will be a test this weekend after suffering a rolled ankle in the Dons VFL win.
Reid will look to train this week before his availability known.
“’Reidy’ just rolled his ankle in that VFL game,” Murphy said.
“He just landed awkwardly and wasn’t too bad, but the decision was to not continue on in that game.
“He’ll be a test for this weekend and we’ll work it out by the time we get to main training.”
