IISNA, a Muslim community football team, ran out rampant victors in the Grand Final defeating Newport by 42 points. IISNA were the favourites heading into Sunday’s game after claiming impressive victories over ICV Doncaster and AJAX the week before.
The strong and vocal crowds were treated to three quality games of football involving members of Melbourne’s Muslim, Jewish and Indigenous communities as well as members of the Victoria Police and AFP, with the aim of bringing together Melbourne’s diverse multicultural society through Australian Rules Football.
The newly created Indigenous team made light work of ICV Doncaster in the fifth place decider with a 32 point victory whilst AJAX defeated Flemington by seven goals to claim third spot.
The Unity Cup finals included a family fun day as well as a number of activities such as AusKick clinics, a Myer activity area, player autographs and Police MFB and SES expos. The Essendon Bowls Club also made a valuable contribution assisting in creating a family atmosphere for spectators with free barefoot bowls..
The Unity Cup was proudly co-hosted by the Australian Federal Police, the Essendon, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs’ and proudly supported by Malka Training Consulting and the Kangan Institute. The Honorable Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O’Connor and Commander of AFP, Scott Lee presented the winning team with their premiership medals.
Our inaugural Baby Bombers event was a Game Day Experience at the round 7 game between Essendon and the Gold Coast at Etihad Stadium. The boys were given the opportunity to wear their James Hird Academy attire and form a guard of honour as the team ran through the banner, and then after the game, head down to the rooms where they were able to obtain a few autographs from their heroes. No doubt a highlight for all the boys!
