Essendon Football Club was today deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ron Evans.

As a former Club chairman and player, Ron Evans holds a special place in the history of this Club. As a former AFL Commission Chairman, he made a magnificent contribution to the game of AFL football.

""I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone involved with Essendon Football Club – staff, players and supporters - when I pass on my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Ron,"" Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said.

""Many of those friends were made at Essendon Football Club where he made such an outstanding contribution both as a player and an administrator.

""He was a wonderful source of advice at this Club to myself and others – always articulate, measured and with the good of the game front of mind. He will be sadly missed.""

""At this time our thoughts go out to his wife Andrea, his sons David and Richard and his daughter Deanne and their families. They will have many cherished memories.""

Ron Evans played 64 games for Essendon between 1958 and 1962. He kicked 210 goals in that time and was Coleman Medallist in 1959 and 1960. He represented Victoria five times.

Following his career at Essendon, he shifted to West Perth where he played 60 games, kicked 271 goals and represented Western Australia five times.

Ron Evans was Essendon Football Club chairman between 1988 and 1992, overseeing the club’s move the MCG. He then went on to serve on the AFL commission in the role of Chairman between 1998 and 2007.
 
Essendon will pay tribute to Ron's contribution to the club at its first home match against Fremantle.
