Essendon Coach James Hird says the Bombers are raring to go in the lead up to the NAB Cup and is looking forward to testing the Club’s game plan against first round opposition teams St Kilda and Brisbane.

Hird said that while David Hille and Tayte Pears will be rested for the pre-season tournament, the Bombers are looking forward to implementing their game plan, which will prove to be the definitive test of the Club’s pre-season training.

“In terms of the NAB Cup, we will rest Hille and Pears as well as Darcy Daniher, but we have the rest of the squad to pick from and we are pretty injury free. We don’t have too many injuries that will hold us back and as much as anything, it will be an opportunity for us to see how our game plan holds up against the opposition,” Hird stated.

“We have just tried to teach the players the philosophy we have about football and what we’ve done over summer is identified how we want to play the game, and we’ve trained the players to play that style of football,” Hird said.

While Hird said the players were on track to complete a fantastic pre-season, he was cautious to set a specific benchmark at seasons end.

“The players have done some fantastic things so far this pre-season in terms of their physical capabilities and now we need to improve on the field and we are not putting any limits on that,” Hird said.

Hird stated a realistic approach was the key to improvement in the upcoming 2011 AFL season.

“We want to improve, and then from there we can see how far we are able to get.”

Speaking at the Telstra AFL Community Camp in Bendigo, Hird said it was important for the Essendon Football Club to be able to give back to the greater community.

“We all grew up as kids looking forward to seeing big AFL players in the local region and these camps are a great initiative for us to really have a greater sense of being able to give back to the community.”

“It is a great opportunity to be able to get out and assist the Bendigo community in any way we can,” Hird said.
