Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
In the second half of the year, Pev really started to recapture the form where he wasn't only a run with player, he was also an attacking possession winner. In the early part of the year, I thought he became a little bit negative. We decided we had to take the pressure of tagging roles off Pev and we put him mainly on the wing and let him play. You just have to be careful that you don't bury players with too much negativity in their roles. Not many people would know that Pev carried an acute stress fracture in his shin, which meant that he wasn't able to get on the training track for nearly all of the second half of the year. So he has an outstanding second half of the year considering what he was able to do on the track.
What some of fan’s had to say:
“Started slowly, but his second half of the year was quite outstanding..his game against Geelong and in the first final were standouts.” Alan Fairbairn.
“A little inconsistent this season, but always courageous, and committed to the club. A great team player who has developed a real following - a worthy wearer of the '11' guernsey after Damien Hardwick.” Michael Wyres.
“Had an inconsistent season, but still showed glimpses off the impact he can have on a game.” Ben Dunn.
“Gives our midfield that bit of a grunt and turned and added another dimension to his game by being more attacking. Shut down Headland in the Final agaisnt Freo, which was a great effort considering that Buckly toweled him up the week before. A very important player.” Alex Fair.
“Ordinary in first half of the year. Injury no excuse as if he was that injured he should not have been playing. Fought back well to be an important player in second half of season.” Stephen McMahon.
“Pity the tagging position is so maligned 'coz this guy works tirelessly behind the scenes and is practically ignored; has the work ethic that many, many more could benefit from emulating.” Ben Greening.
“Average first half of the season, but things seemed to change once Pev lost the forearm guard he'd been wearing. Rarely beaten in the second half of the year, and has confidence going into 2004.” Dean Hallikainen.
“Very poor first half of the season. Appeared slow and unfit and was lucky to hold his place. Was back to hist best in the second half.” Geoffrey Hope.
