Essendon’s selection committee have their work cut out for them next week with a near full list of players available for the club’s season opener against the reigning Premiers Geelong.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said all players, with the exception of Leroy Jetta, have been given the all-clear to play.

“We are in a really good state coming into Round 1, probably the best we have been in a long time,” Hamilton said.

“Travis Colyer has basically resumed skills training now after splitting webbing in his hand and should be available to play Round 1.

“Leroy Jetta is still a number of weeks away. He has resumed doing some training but is obviously inhibited in what he can take part in due to his hand. He can still do his aerobic training among other things.”

Joining Jetta on the side-lines will be Mark McVeigh, Nathan Lovett-Murray and Michael Hurley (suspension) with 14 other players still needing to be cut from the remaining 36 available senior-listed players.

“We have a few players out with suspensions but we are looking pretty good from an injury perspective so it will be a challenge for us but it is a good problem to have,” Hamilton said.

“There were no injury concerns to come out of Morwell last weekend which is good because you go to those practice games and you want the team to do well in terms of systems of play and you want the players to do well but you always hold your breath a little bit in terms of injuries.

“We have done pretty well across the whole pre-season and it will be exciting to see the results of that hard work against Geelong.”
