Speedy midfielder Ben Howlett couldn’t have scripted a better start to his AFL career, being told on the MCG last night that he would make a Round 1 debut against the reigning Premiers in a Friday night blockbuster.

Howlett was among teammates when the coach delivered the good news following the club’s inaugural Premiership reunion dinner.

Matthew Knights told Bomber.tv he was pleased to reward the 21-year-old who has improved rapidly since running out in the club’s practice match against Melbourne earlier in the pre-season.

“It’s a wonderful story. He’s come from a long way back and has made really good ground in the last month,” Knights said.

“There’s no greater challenge for him to come up against the likes of Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartell, Joel Corey and the star-studded midfield that Geelong has got.""

The 180cm hardball winner was taken at selection No. 30 in last December's rookie draft after a best-and-fairest-winning season with WAFL club Peel Thunder. He was elevated from the rookie-list last week after impressing in three challenge cup games.

“At 21 years old he’s been through three drafts so he’s really enjoyed the time he’s spent down at the club so far,” Knights said.

“He’s an interesting player in that he’s quite polished in all areas. His skills are very tidy and he prides himself on hitting targets.

“He brings a hard ball winning edge that will really assist Jobe Watson, Andrew Welsh and the likes.”
