This week’s Champions of Essendon group contains four of Essendon's favourite sons and greatest players. Tim Watson, Gary O’Donnell, Leon Baker and Garry Foulds are competing for a spot in the Essendon Football Club history book to become a Champion of Essendon. Tim Watson played 307 games for the Bombers between 1977 and 1994 and captained the side from 1989 to 1991. A brilliant, creative half forward and later ruck rover, he started his career at the age of fifteen years and nine months after coming from Dimboola. He was one of the youngest ever players for the Bombers. By 1980 his superb ball skills, pace and balance combined to make him one of the League's most dynamic players.
One of Watson’s former teammates, Gary O’Donnell is also up for selection this week. O’Donnell played 243 games for the Bombers and won the best and fairest award in the 1993 premiership year. He creativeness around the packs was a genuine strength and his consistency saw him tagged 'Mr Reliable'.
1984 and 1985 premiership players Leon Baker and Garry Foulds also go head-to-head with Watson in this week’s Champions of Essendon voting. Baker started his career with the Bombers at the age of 27. He starred in the centre in both the 1984 and 1985 premiership victories. Foulds played 300 games for Essendon between 1974 and 1989. A stalwart home grown defender from St. Bernards and West Essendon whose best football was played on the half back flank, but was called to play virtually everywhere on the ground during his career. There was nothing flashy about his play although he was a fine long kick.

Finally there is some good news on the injury front. Essendon mid-fielder Damien Peverill is a great chance of making his return to senior football this weekend. Peverill was expected to miss up to five weeks after injuring his arm on Anzac Day but he could return after three. ""He has made good progress. It's no certainty he will play. We will test him later in the week but he is very close,"" Essendon football manager Matthew Drain said.
