Essendon Football Club will continue its support in the fight against cancer when it hosts the club’s sixth annual Call to Arms match at the MCG tonight.
The club will incorporate a yellow armband into its guernsey which will later be auctioned on essendonfc.com.au in support of the campaign and a number of players will wear yellow mouthguards provided by Dental Solution.
The AFL’s support of the campaign will see the umpires in tonight’s match against Melbourne wearing a yellow uniform, while the lines around the goalsquare and centre circle will also be marked in yellow.
CEO Ian Robson said the club was pleased to be able to make a contribution to an important awareness campaign that aimed to raise funds to help fight men’s cancers.
“Cancer is something that touches the lives of people everywhere and the reality is that 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they reach the age of 85,” Robson said.
“Essendon Football Club has experienced the effects of cancer first-hand through the courageous battle of former player Adam Ramanauskas and we urge all Essendon supporters to get behind such an important campaign.”
The annual Call to Arms campaign is a national cancer awareness campaign which invites players, administrators and supporters from all sporting codes and clubs across Australia to wear a yellow armband to raise funds to treat, prevent and detect cancers in men, as well as to support those facing cancer.
Through the club’s partnership with the Cancer Council over the past five years, Essendon Football Club has helped raise over $2.5 million for the fight against cancer.
