Watson said teams with strong defensive structures have been the most successful in recent years.
“The game has got to the stage where you have to be a team that holds others from scoring,” Watson said.

“For the last three or four years, team that have finished top four are normally the ones that go deep into September”.
“The philosophy from the NFL is ‘defence wins championships’ and the same thing applies in the AFL.” Watson stated.
Speaking at the Telstra AFL Community Camp in Bendigo, Watson said due to the Bombers new look experienced coaching group, the Club’s game plan will encompass a number of philosophies from different AFL teams.
“With a combination of four different people from a variety of clubs, we have an amalgamation of these different philosophies.”
“Two guys who were at Geelong during a very successful period, an ex-captain of Adelaide and someone who has been at the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne bringing over his own ideas, as well Hirdy injecting his own flavour.” Watson said.

In the lead up to the NAB Cup, Watson said the players are now looking forward to implementing the game plan in competitive conditions.
“If you want to compete and want to be successful you have to be able to hold the other team from scoring. And there is an element of that in our new game plan.”
