Everyone at Essendon knew how skilled young Shane Harvey was - he looked a natural footballer from the moment he arrived at Windy Hill. Nonetheless he was forced to wait until yesterday's round 6 clash with Fremantle to make his debut at AFL level. But it was worth the wait. It took the former Preston Knights youngster two minutes to put the football world on notice - he has a future and the highlights tape at the end of his career will be worth watching.

Harvey's first kick in AFL football wasn't that of fairytales. It was just 10 seconds into the game when he pounced on a loose ball. ""I just put it on my boot as quickly as I could to try and move the ball forward,"" Harvey said. ""It just rolled out of bounds.""

But just one minute later Harvey got his second kick and it was something he and all Essendon supporters who witnessed it will never forget. Harvey was lurking at the base of a pack of players contesting a boundary line throw in deep in the Essendon forward line.

The ball was tossed into play and Leigh Brown collected the ball. He was in turn tackled by Blake Caracella and an errant handball landed in the lap of Harvey. Hemmed in on the boundary line Harvey put the ball on his right foot and dribbled it straight through the middle. It was a magnificent show of skill and it was executed with great poise given it was early in his first game.

""I have kicked a few goals like that in the past. I used to practice them in the loungeroom at home. I don't use it much but I just threw it on the boot - I didn't really know how much time I had,"" Harvey said. ""I was rapt when it went through. It helped me feel a bit more comfortable about playing in the seniors.""

But Harvey wasn't finished there. He also kicked the Bombers' second goal of the game courtesy of an excellent left foot snap from the top of the goal square after receiving a handball from Matthew Lloyd. It was an excellent start to what looks a promising career. Essendon fans have much to look forward to.
