Getting injured is any player’s worst nightmare. It is even worse when the injury happens in the dying minutes of the game. You could see the sheer despair on Sean Wellman’s face on Saturday night when he injured his hamstring only moments before the final siren and well after the final result had been decided.
The news got even worse for Wellman after the game, when the medical staff advised him that he would be sidelined for at least one month. ""Sean tore his hamstring and the expectation from medical staff is Sean will need a four to five week recovery period,"" said football manager Dominic Cato.
""The initial treatment will be some degree of rest and then he will work on gradually increasing mobility."" It wasn’t a good night injury wise for Essendon, with Dean Rioli hurting himself earlier in the match.
Rioli’s goal of playing every game this season came to a grinding holt on Saturday night. Rioli injured his hamstring in the second quarter of the Round 12 match against Brisbane and took no further part in the match.
""Dean has actually strained his hamstring and at this stage it looks like he will miss the next three to four weeks,"" Cato said.
""Similar to Sean, Dean will have an initial rest period to avoid further swelling and then in the next week or so will work on improving mobility. He will also have ongoing physiotherapy treatment.""
In other news – Dustin Fletcher and Damien Peverill will front the AFL tribunal this evening. Fletcher was reported for allegedly charging Brisbane’s Anthony Corrie in the second quarter of the Round 12 match. Peverill was reported for misconduct in that he allegedly interfered with an opposition official during the second quarter.
