Essendon’s chances of pushing back into the top four next season received a huge boost this afternoon with news that Scott Lucas has re-signed with the club. Lucas signed a three-year deal – the first of which will see him become eligible for life membership. Lucas was in outstanding form last season, particularly at centre half-back and many felt he was unlucky to miss All Australian selection. Lucas joins Sean Wellman, Matthew Lloyd and Mark Johnson as recent re-signings with the Bombers.

The importance of Lucas’ re-signing with the Bombers shouldn’t be underestimated. The Bombers’ list is full of exciting, young talent but some experience is required if the side is to gel – Lucas provides just that whether it is going forward or back. Together with Dustin Fletcher, Lucas provides a solid base around which a defence can be built. Matthew Lloyd and James Hird provide the same foundation at the other end of the ground.

Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said it was welcome news that the club had re-signed Lucas. “Scott has been an extremely valuable player at Essendon over the last few years. He has over 150 games worth of experience and has just completed one of his best seasons at the club. He is obviously a key player in our side,” Jackson said.

Lucas was drafted to Essendon at selection 4 in the 1994 National Draft. He has been an integral member of the team in recent years and was a key to the 2000 premiership success.
