Jason Winderlich will undergo scans this week after sustaining a suspected fracture to his hand in the second quarter of last night’s win against the Kangaroos.
Further medical assessment will reveal whether the 25-year-old will require surgery but Essendon football boss Paul Hamilton says he expects Winderlich to miss next week.
“Jason received a knock to his hand and we think there could be a break in the hand. He will have x-rays over the next day or so but at stage it is unlikely he will play next week,” Hamilton said.
“Depending on the severity of the break and where it is will determine just how long he is out for. Sometimes you only miss one week and other times you miss four or five with those sorts of injuries so we have to investigate it a little bit further and will have to wait and see on that one.”
The injury puts a dampener on what was a heartening performance by the Bombers last night in which Winderlich was a key contributor.
“It is disappointing because he was terrific last night,” Hamilton said.
“He showed a lot of courage yesterday because he broke it quite early in the game and played out the remainder of the game under a fair bit of duress, with a fair bit of commitment.
“We were really pleased because he was keen to play onand the doctors said it wouldn’t do any further damage. I think it showed the resilience of the group.”
Angus Monfries also received medical treatment following the match, undergoing stitches to his knee but Hamilton says it won’t rule him out for the annual Call to Arms match against St Kilda next week.
The Call to Arms match will see Essendon incorporate a yellow armband into their guernsey to help raise funds and awareness for men's cancers.

Essendon’s three-point win over the Kangaroos last night has provided some relief for the Bombers following a month of mounting scrutiny. Speedy midfielder Travis Colyer told media this morning that while the last month of football had been tough for the group, it only made for a sweeter victory.
