RANK BARNARD'S FINAL SEASON
Paul Barnard announced his retirement from AFL football at the completion of the 2003 season - his final appearance coming in Essendon's semi-final loss to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium. Barnard didn't play as much senior football as he would have liked during his final season, a shoulder injury being the initial problem. Once fit Barnard was not an automatic selection as he had been in season's past and as far as he was concerned the writing was on the wall. A great clubman and popular with the fans, big-hearted Barney will be missed at Windy Hill.
