A bigger, fitter and more skilled Nathan Lovett-Murray is set to establish himself as one of Essendon’s linchpins in season 2006, according to Bombers’ fitness coach John Quinn. In his early season appraisal, Quinn said Lovett-Murray had been a standout along with speedster Jason Winderlich.

Lovett-Murray played some outstanding football for Essendon in 2005 but Quinn said the best is yet to come based on the 23-year-old’s pre-season.

""Nathan is going really well and he might just sneak under the radar again. He has increased his strength significantly and I think that will make him a far more formidable opponent in defence,"" Quinn said.

""Along with this his running power has improved again. He was renowned for running off half back last year and I think fans will find he does it even better this year. The coaches have also been working very hard on his skills.""

Winderlich has struggled to establish himself as a senior player since being picked up by the Bombers having played just 21 games since making his debut in 2003. He has played forward, back and in the midfield in that time but his new found endurance could see him become a permanent fixture in the midfield, according to Quinn.

""Jason has suddenly found that engine that we always thought he had and he is pushing new boundaries in terms of his fitness. He has never previously been able to put a full pre-season together but things are going along very well for him this time around,"" Quinn said.

""He is in the top four or five of every test we do. If he can maintain what he has done so far I think he is another player we can throw into our midfield mix.""

And Essendon fans might want to throw Chris Heffernan back into the midfield mix. The returned Bomber has had a very good pre-season to this stage. ""It would be fair to say that Chris has surprised a few, particularly with his speed,"" Quinn said.

A new-look Jobe Watson has been the other standout. Leaner, and certainly looking meaner, Watson knows this season is critical to him.

""The fans won’t recognise him – he has a new body, new hair do and new attitude. All things being equal I am very excited about what lies ahead for him,"" Quinn said.
