Essendon chairman Graeme McMahon said the passing of Dick Reynolds was a very sad occasion, not only Essendon Football Club, but the game of Australian Rules Football.
“On behalf of the Essendon members and supporters I pass on our sincerest condolences to the Reynolds family,” McMahon said. “He was a wonderful footballer and true gentleman who helped build the foundations on which this great club flourished.”
“He holds a special place the history of this club and the hearts of its supporters. While this is a very sad occasion we will cherish the memories.”
Last Friday Essendon Football Club named Reynolds as its greatest ever player at its Champions of Essendon function. In an emotional tribute, 1400 Essendon supporters gave him a standing ovation in what was to be his final public appearance.
“I think every Essendon supporter who attended last Friday night’s function will remember a man of great dignity and a man who loved the Essendon Football Club. It was a fitting goodbye,” McMahon said.
Reynolds played 320 games for Essendon, won seven best and fairests and three Brownlow Medals. He was a member of four Premiership sides.
The family has requested privacy at this time and funeral arrangements will be released in the next few days.
