Jason Winderlich will undergo surgery this week to repair a fractured hand sustained during the Bombers’ win over the Kangaroos on the weekend. The 25-year-old is expected to miss 1-2 weeks.

Essendon football boss Paul Hamilton said scans today brought good news for the speedy midfielder after they revealed a break to the middle of the hand which will allow a much faster recovery time than fractures closer to the knuckle.

“The good news is that the break was in a place where it can be operated on and there is every chance that he will only miss one week,” Hamilton told The Recovery Room.

“We had concerns yesterday that it could be up to 5-6 weeks but those fears have since been laid to rest so we are really happy with that.”

The injury occurred early in the second term, with Winderlich seeking medical attention before playing out the remainder of the match.
