Michael Long will complete his coaching and marketing duties with the Essendon Football Club and move to his new position at the AFL in November. Long is excited about the new challenge, however is sad to leave the club he has called home for the past 15 years. “It is a fantastic opportunity for me to help develop the game around Australia with the indigenous community. It will be difficult to leave Essendon after spending so much time here and so many great memories, however I think the time is right to make the next move in my career,"" Long said.
A LONG FAREWELL
Michael Long will be leaving Essendon at the end of the season to take up a full-time role with the AFL. ""The AFL commission will take a further initiative in establishing an AFL Indigenous Australian Football Foundation. This foundation will oversee a range of programs to encourage the development of indigenous athletes to our game. Further, I would like to advise that the former Essendon champion Michael Long will be the chairman of that foundation,"" Evans said.
