The countdown to the launch of the Bomberland website contiues as does our look at the greatest ever coaches at Windy Hill. Our first weekly poll, which will go live this Friday, is asking supporters to vote on who is Essendon's greatest ever coach. The first two nominations have been Dick Reynolds and John Worrall - the first coach to take the Bombers to back-to-back premierships. Today we look at current Bomber coach Kevin Sheedy, who like Reynolds, has taken the club to four premierships.
Kevin Sheedy has coached Essendon in more games than any other coach in the club's history. He is entering his 21st as senior coach at Essendon and the 2000 Grand Final was his 472nd game in charge. He has won 306 of those games which gives him a winning percentage of 65%.
Sheeds took over at Windy Hill in 1981 and supporters were desperate for him to turn the clubs fortunes around. The previous decade had been the worst 10 years in the history of the club. In his first two seasons as coach Sheeds' side was beaten in elimination finals but the signs were good. The side was runner-up in 1983 before collecting back-to-back Premeirships in 1984 and 1985. It was the first time since Dick Reynolds (1949/50) and only the third time in the history of the club that such a feat had been achieved.
The Bombers were now a highly competitive club and in 1993 they again reached the Grand Final. Sheeds' side went into the match against Carlton as underdogs but they simply blew their opposition away with a brilliant performance. Sheedy had inspired his side and they produced magnificent football.
And then there was season 2000. The Bombers were devastated after losing the 1999 preliminary final and Sheedy was hell bent on his players making amends the following season. The Bombers did so in magnificent fashion winning 29 of their 30 official matches and winning both the Ansett Cup and 2000 Premeirship.
Sheedy is not only one of Essendon's great coaches but one of the greatest coaches the game has seen. Only five coaches have coached more games. He is the third nomination for Friday's inaugural Weekly Poll - Who is the greatest coach Essendon has ever had? Keep an eye out for our final nomination tomorrow.
