After a disappointing start to the season in which Ben Haynes dislocated his shoulder, the 22-year-old had an ideal second half of the year. The Essendon fans were extremely impressed with the form the rookie showed in the seven senior appearances he made. The fans were in agreement that Haynes is an exciting new talent for the team who has great speed and silky smooth skills. Haynes received a ranking of 6.2 / 10 from the fans.

Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Ben Haynes turned himself and his career around. He was here in 1999 and then went to Richmond and got sacked, so he has been around the world a few times. He is 22-years-old and he has been in the system for four or five years and he is committed and has said he wants to make it. We have seen the talent he possesses - he can kick on either side of his body and is a good mover. He missed 17 weeks with a dislocated shoulder, so it was a remarkable effort by him to get elevated to the senior list and play good senior footy. If he keeps focussed and keeps his mind on his job and works on his fitness and body development, he will only improve again.

What some of fan’s had to say:
Richmond's loss is Essendon's exciting find! To come off the rookie list and play every game subsequent, including holding his place during the finals, his permanent elevation to the senior list is an exciting prospect for Bomber fans. Fast, skillful, and a future star. Michael Wyres

Ben Haynes has the potential to be a great player for us. I can't wait to see him play again next year. A great find for the Bomber team! Helen Scully

What has Ben Haynes been doing the last few years to not be able to make it on to an AFL list? Seems to have all the skills, particularly the ability to run and evade with the football. Added a much needed spark to the side when introduced, although he was starved of opportunities a bit in the finals. However, if he can continue his form next year, he should earn a permanent place in the forward line. Shane King

Shows great promise and gave us something extra when he played. Looking forward to seeing him make a big impact in 2004. Sean Elwick

Ben is a very exciting player and has huge potential with speed to go with it. His kicking ability is excellent and he is a very accurate kick for goal. Carol Edmeades

Every rookie on the list and every player who gets a chance to play AFL should have a good look at what Ben achieved this year. His single minded determination to succeed rewarded him with finals appearances and a promotion to the senior list. I am sure he will continue with his form in 2004. Garry Tilley

Hard to see why the Tigers did not want him anymore. Full of run and skill and has so much promise. Had a good break through season and expect big things for 2004 and years to come. Mitchell Comfort

A lot of talent. Has the ability to make space and get the ball. Has the confidence to run the ball up the wing and have a shot a goal. If he keeps up the hard work, he could find himself permanently in the senior side. A boy to keep your eye on in 2004. Jason Laver

Just imagine if he didn't hurt his shoulder earlier in the year. His skills show that he has played senior football before, and knows what it is like to miss out so he isn't going to let this opportunity pass. Deserved a permanent senior spot. Well Done! Tara Murray
