Scans have confirmed Essendon utility James Stewart suffered a hamstring strain during the Bombers’ AAMI Community Series clash with Geelong on Saturday night.

Stewart was sidelined during the third quarter at GMHBA Stadium and will likely miss approximately the next eight to 10 weeks of football.

General manager of football Josh Mahoney said it was disappointing news for the 27-year-old on the eve of the season.

“Scans in recent days have unfortunately confirmed a significant hamstring injury for James. After a very strong pre-season, James was beginning to feel comfortable in the team as a key defender. This is his first soft-tissue strain, but we look forward to his recovery and getting him back for still a large portion of the season,” Mahoney said.

“In pleasing news, Nick Hind was cleared of any significant damage to his shoulder and will be available for round one.”
