Emerging Essendon ruckman Nick Bryan has signed a two-year extension, remaining at the NEC Hangar until at least the end of 2023.

Taken at pick No.38 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, Bryan made his senior debut this season in round seven against Carlton and impressed with his athleticism and ball use.

Against the Blues, the 19-year-old collected 18 hitouts, 12 disposals, three marks and three tackles against an experienced opponent in Marc Pittonet.

The 203cm tall has shown accelerated development in his second year at the club, becoming one of the most consistent and dominant players in Essendon’s VFL side.

Bryan said he was elated to sign on with the Bombers.

“I’m thrilled to have signed on for the next two years,” Bryan said.

“I love the club and it’s been a great place to come and develop my ruck craft under the guidance of ‘T-Bell’ (Tom Bellchambers) and also work alongside ‘Drapes’ (Sam Draper) and ‘Flip’ (Andrew Phillips).

“Having had a taste of senior football this year, I’m determined to keep working on my game and keep putting my hand up for selection to become a consistent part of this team moving forward.

“I’m thankful to be staying and I can’t wait to see what this side can do over the next few years under ‘Truck’ (Ben Rutten) and ‘Dys’ (Dyson Heppell) as our leaders.”

General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said the Bombers were delighted to secure Bryan until 2023.

“We’re pleased to have retained Nick’s services for at least the next two years,” Dodoro said.

“He’s an exciting young player who had some interest from other clubs, so to be able to have him sign on is a great testament to the football program and culture we’re building as a club.

“Nick’s a unique player who has such raw potential and if he can continue his development, he can be an athletic and mobile ruckman for us.

“We believe Nick is a big part of this club’s future and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can achieve for the rest of 2021 and beyond.”
