Matthew Knights says emerging key defender Paddy Ryder could soon be utilised in the ruck and forward, if the Bombers' new look defensive line-up continues to develop.
After solid performances from young defenders Michael Hurley and Tayte Pears, Knights is considering a move for 21-year-old Ryder.
“Hurley and Pears from my point of view are a must to have in the team,"" he said.
""Both young men are going to be in two or three years time massive men. If you see the shape and size of them now and the agility, in a couple of year’s time- that’s why I love looking at the vision of a year or two ahead.
“Darcy Daniher and David Myers are also coming through as young defenders, meaning we can hopefully free up Paddy to allow him to play in other parts of the ground, whether that be ruck or forward.
""I think that is only going to be beneficial for this group, we’d defiantly like to do that more often then not.”
Ryder, who is 195cm and is entering his fourth season for the Bombers, has lived up to early expectations and has cemented a spot at centre half-back.
After a disappointing loss in Round 1, Knights said to the media this morning that he wants the team to capitalise better on opportunities when they play Fremantle on Sunday.
“(Dean) Soloman coming back into the Fremantle team will add a bit of extra spice, an ex-Essendon player, it will be good to see him run out,” he said.
“Fremantle move their players around a lot and they can play good footy.
""We just need to be on our game and be ready for anything because as you said they have been pushing their players to different parts of the ground, which has gone away from what they have traditionally done in the past.”
“We will certainly talk about possible tactics Fremantle may take, in our match committee meeting this afternoon and will look at players like Sandilands and Pavlich, who are right up there with the elite of the competition.
""We’re going to have to bring a really good game on Sunday if we want to win.”
Mark McVeigh is edging closer to a senior berth having been given advice from medical staff that he could be available to play against Carlton in Round 3. Since injuring his ankle in the NAB Cup, McVeigh has shown steady improvement and is now completing running drills.
