Midfielder Andrew McGrath has completed a major step in his comeback from a knee injury after returning to running.

The 23-year-old injured his PCL in the Bombers’ round 12 Dreamtime in Perth match and has experienced a gradual build towards a return to aerobic training.

Despite being in hotel quarantine for two weeks due to visiting a tier one exposure site, McGrath has maintained a positive trajectory in his recovery, according to head of high performance Sean Murphy.

“‘Pidge’ is chomping at the bit,” Murphy told Dons Digital’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.

“He’s really excited to get going and he’s up and running now and we‘re almost having to hold him back.

“He’s ticking over his legs and (will progress) over the next couple of weeks.”

Another positive update is the progression of midfielder Jye Caldwell, who has begun full training this week.

Murphy said the 20-year-old was inching closer to a return to play if he can get through consecutive training sessions.

“‘Calders’ is ticking along nicely,” he said.

“He’s now into full skills this week. He’ll be building up this week and hopefully we’ll see him play in the next couple of weeks.

Key defender Jayden Laverde is a 50-50 chance to play in Sunday’s game against the Western Bulldogs after sustaining a shoulder injury.

The 24-year-old has avoided any major damage and was able to play through the Dons’ match against the Swans, but is carrying soreness and will be listed as a test this week.

“Jayden injured that shoulder during the game,” Murphy said.

“He did really well to function during the game because he was in a lot of discomfort.

“He was cleared of structural damage which is really good but he’s still very sore and he’ll be a test this weekend.”

Murphy also highlighted a terrific running effort from defender Tom Cutler, while giving further updates on Kyle Langford, Dyson Heppell, Harrison Jones and Kaine Baldwin.
