Essendon Football Club today announced a trading profit of $760,894 for the year ending October 31st 2009.
Chief executive Ian Robson said the final profit was up slightly on 2008 and was positive considering the tough economic environment.
“Our total assets are $27 million and our net asset position remains strong at $21.7 million which is a sound position to be in,” Robson said.
“Our year-end cash position is also solid at over $2.4 million, including financial assets.”
Robson said that during the financial year Essendon merged with the Melton Country Club, which contributed $2.1 million in net assets. The Bombers have invested a further $1 million in the development of this facility since the merge.
“Significantly, Essendon’s profit result includes a community contribution in excess of $120,000 to its affiliated sporting clubs and $200,000 on the upkeep of the associated community sporting club facilities,” Robson said.
“Membership is just so important to a football club and Essendon had another solid year with 40,634 loyal fans signing up which contributed $4.3 million to the Bombers. I want to thank all of our supporters and call on them to sign up as 2010 This Is Essendon members.
“Another positive from the year is that our final profit result was achieved with an increase in spending on football of $1.2million. We are committed to providing the football department with the resources they need to succeed because winning games of football is our core business.
“I would like to recognise the $460,000 Federal Government contribution as part of the Windy Hill Green Precinct development. This money helped the club to conduct a complete energy audit and lighting re-fit to reduce our carbon footprint and people can learn about the project on the club website.”
Robson said Essendon had continued to undergo a period of change which he says has been exciting to be part of.
“The club has a relatively new coach, new CEO and will have a new chairman soon. We also have a young and exciting list so there is plenty of enthusiasm and excitement about the future at Windy Hill,” he said.
“I also want to thank all our valued business partners - including our major partner Samsung – for their support of the club.”
The Bendigo Bombers are on the hunt for experienced, talented recruits according to new coach Shannon Grant. Speaking exclusively to Bomber.tv, Grant said he wants to create a successful environment but needs a few more seniors players to help achieve that.
