Teenager Albert Thurgood made his debut in 1892 and quickly became the game’s superstar.

Thurgood set a new goalkicking record of 56 goals - the first player to reach 50 goals in a season - and was part of Essendon's unbeaten run of 56 games, which commenced with a win over Footscray on July 1.

In 19 games, Essendon won 15, lost one and drew three.

Other champions included Charles ‘Tracker’ Forbes, Alex ‘Joker’ Hall and Charles ‘Commotion’ Pearson.
